  Chamber to Showcase Borough at '08 Fancy Food Show back to Recent News home

Local and proud of it – that is the hallmark of the Brooklyn food manufacturers showing at the 54th Summer Fancy Food Show under the REAL BROOKLYN™/ Brooklyn Goes Global banner (booths 5414 and 5416), June 29 – July 1 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. Whether it’s fudge from an old family recipe but suited to today’s discerning foodie, or hot sauce that is truly “fuel for food” – Brooklyn will be well represented.

REAL BROOKLYN™ is a targeted, one-stop-shop marketing initiative of Brooklyn Goes Global (BGG), a program created by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to help Brooklyn-based manufacturers sell their products nationally and internationally by providing sales and marketing support.

Four companies displaying at this year’s event – newcomers Brooklyn Petro and Brooklyn Fudge will join show veterans Wine Cellar Sorbets and Great King/King of the Sea – all share something besides local aesthetics. Each brand offers a new twist on an old favorite, like Brooklyn Fudge’s Wasabi Pecan fudge or Wine Cellar Sorbet’s transforming classic wine varietals into an icy treat.

“These brands exemplify what Brooklyn is all about – our innovation, our good taste, and our ability to compete with the best of them,” said Carl Hum, president & CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “Local businesses are thriving and making a name for themselves in the gastronomic world. Our Fancy Food Show exhibitors will stand alongside giants in the business, and we want the world to know what Brooklyn has to offer."

Take two transplants from Albany and Abeline, give them some hot peppers to play with, and out comes Exhaust, the first commercially available hot sauce from Brooklyn Petro. Campbell Rankin and Scott Morris were first inspired to create hot sauces after attending the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s annual Chile Pepper Fiesta, and needed only a year to go from visitors to exhibitors. Using no fillers and a lower salt content than most commercially available sauces, Brooklyn Petro delivers a careful balance of heat and flavor to anything it garnishes. In addition to creating commercial and custom hot sauces, the pair has expanded to relishes, dry rubs and marinades, and their efforts have earned raves among the heat-seeking crowd. Their creations are currently featured in shops and restaurants throughout Brooklyn.

Armed with a recipe from her Great Aunt Mae, Amanda Jones came to Brooklyn only to turn the confectionary world on its ear. A thoughtful combination of fruits, nuts – even wasabi – with rich, sumptuous chocolate, her fudge is inspired by Brooklyn itself and has developed a devoted following. Currently manufactured in a facility with a view of the famous Parachute Jump in Coney Island, Brooklyn Fudge is available for order online or in specialty shops throughout Brooklyn.

Childhood friends and Queens natives Bret Birnbaum and Dave “Sorbet Sommelier™” Zablocki teamed up in Brooklyn to create a whole new way to enjoy wine varietals such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir – and more recently, Sake. Using the purest ingredients and keeping true to the wine’s character, Wine Cellar Sorbets offer a new way to enjoy your favorite quaff. Having expanded the brand considerably, Wine Cellar Sorbets are now found in stores and restaurants throughout the New York City area and in Whole Foods markets in select states.

Moses Freund grew up working in his father’s Brooklyn fish market, so it was only a matter of time before he developed a better canned tuna. Using the finest cuts of yellowtail, King of the Sea tuna strives for piscatorial perfection and boasts some of the lowest mercury content in commercially available tuna, garnering national attention from the media. King of the Sea tuna and other Great King brand seafood delicacies – such as salmon, sardines and mackerel – are available nationally.
