What does your business do? When and Why did you join the Chamber?

Penda Aiken is president of the staffing agency she started in 1990: “We assist clients by assessing their staffing needs and supplying them with 'human capital' resources in the areas of clerical, data entry, administrative and finance, on a temporary, temporary to permanent or direct hire basis. We emphasize workforce retention and follow the progress of our placements. We are expanding our business on a national level with contracts in Georgia, Rhode Island and North Carolina.

I joined the Chamber in 2003 after relocating my office from midtown Manhattan to downtown Brooklyn. I wanted to connect with other Brooklyn business and property owners and knew the Chamber could help make that happen.”

How has your Brooklyn Chamber Membership assisted your business?

“I serve on the Chamber’s Board of Directors and Government Affairs Committee; I was part of the Chamber delegation to Albany in 2005. Through my active Chamber participation I connected with the merchants on Livingston, Nevins and Schermerhorn streets, with whom I am working as a member of the BID committee to create a Business Improvement District that will connect with other local downtown BIDs. I find the Chamber's networking events and seminars very helpful. Not only did one of the seminars at the 2007 Marketing Expo help us to think about how to optimally use our Web site, but we also met a potential client.”
