What does your business do? When and Why did you join the Brooklyn Chamber?

Since 2004, owners Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath have created sustainable furniture through Uhuru Design, their design/build studio in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood: “We make high-end furniture for retail and commercial environments using sustainable material; either recycled materials, found objects, sustainable harvested wood or recycled steel. We sell a lot to the interior design trade, including architects and decorators. We also have a fair number of private clients plus retail representatives in both New York and Los Angeles.

We often participate in trade shows and became Members of the Chamber through their BKLYN DESIGNS™ show in 2006.  We’ve exhibited at the show every year since and it has been a great way to reach out to new clients.  We launched the Standard Chair at the 2008 show, and now it is in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Museum.”

How has your Brooklyn Chamber membership assisted your business?
“It’s been great!  We just started becoming more involved in using our membership.  We find the small business seminars helpful – especially one in particular we attended about strategies for running your business.   We also were able to offer health insurance to all our employees through the Chamber’s Brooklyn HealthWorks program.  As a result of our involvement with the Chamber and its HealthWorks program, we had the opportunity to host the Mayor’s press conference announcing the city’s Web-based health initiative.”
