Brooklyn's Progress
October 2001

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce launched Brooklyn Eats Out, a new, borough-wide restaurant coupon book that is the centerpiece of a new Chamber initiative to promote Brooklyn’s restaurant industry. Brooklyn Eats Out, which was unveiled at a press conference preceding the Brooklyn Chamber’s 5th Annual Brooklyn Eats tasting event at the New York Marriott Brooklyn on October 22, contains 30 valuable coupons from neighborhood restaurants throughout Brooklyn. The book features a cover price of $25 and will be available for purchase at area bookstores or directly through the Brooklyn Chamber (online at www.iBrooklyn.com or by phone at 718-875-1000). Promotional coupons range from free desserts to “buy one entrée, get the second free” offers, and the diverse lineup of participating restaurants includes Henry’s End, Junior’s, Brawta Caribbean Café, Lundy’s, Jacques Torres Chocolates and many more. The total value of Brooklyn Eats Out coupons is approximately $350 and they are valid for an entire year. Chamber President Kenneth Adams said, “The Brooklyn restaurant industry has become an incredibly dynamic and important sector of our borough’s economy, and we’re confident that Brooklyn Eats Out and our Restaurant Initiative will help it to thrive.” Adams pointed out that the new coupon book will join the annual Brooklyn Eats tasting event as a toll for both raising awareness about the borough’s wide range of restaurants and directly driving business to local establishments. Other components of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Restaurant Initiative include Brooklyn Eats Online (an online restaurant guide that is part of the Chamber’s comprehensive iBrooklyn.com website), a newly-created Chamber of Commerce Restaurant Owners Committee, and numerous advertising and promotional opportunities for participating businesses. Major funding for Brooklyn Eats and several other components of this initiative was provided by Councilman Herbert Berman and the Brooklyn delegation of the New York City Council. Adams concluded, “The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has always sought out innovative ways to support our local industries and businesses, and we’re confident that Brooklyn Eats Out will turn out to be one of our most successful economic development projects to date. Not only will Brooklyn restaurant owners benefit greatly from the increased customer traffic, but food fans from around the city will enjoy great deals at some of the best restaurants in town.
