Brooklyn Dentist Provides New Treatment for Migraines back to Brooklyn's Progress Online

Brooklyn's Progress
October/November 2005

Michael Steinberg, D.D.S, Your Favorite Dentist, 2614 Ave. U in Sheepshead Bay, unexpectedly finds himself on the cutting edge of migraine treatment.  After viewing an episode of “Good Morning America” in June 2001, Dr.Steinberg became excited about an FDA-approved non-pharmaceutical migraine treatment featured on the television show called NTI-TSS (nociceptive trigeminal inhibition-tension suppression system).

Dr. Steinberg already had been using the NTI device in his practice to treat TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) or jaw joint pain.  Dr. James Boyd, a San Diego dentist featured on the “Good Morning America” episode, developed another use for the device that is effective for migraine pain.

Studies show that migraine sufferers have hyperactive jaw clenching during sleep. Worn by the patient on the front two teeth during sleep, the NTI device drastically decreases clenching intensity thus reducing headache pain for a significant number of migraine sufferers.  The device can be custom made in a dentist’s office in under an hour.

A Brooklyn Chamber Member since January 2005, Dr. Steinberg has been providing this therapy for over four years and has found the results to be outstanding for his patients. “As the only New York dentist to attend an advanced course on the NTI in May 2005, I feel privileged to be on the cutting edge of a headache prevention therapy that works better than anything for more people, more often, and with no side effects.”

The American Medical Association estimates that 28 million people in the U.S. suffer from migraines – the most disabling form of primary headache. The social and economic impact is staggering with estimates approaching $17.2 billion per year in lost productivity:

  • 18.6% of women suffer migraines versus 6% of men
  • 5% of children lose school days to migraines resulting in their parents losing workdays (usually, the moms)
  • One study of 13,000 workers showed 57% lost a total of 10,000 workdays due to migraine.

Dr. Steinberg is a migraine sufferer himself, and has used the NTI device with much success.
