Brooklyn's Progress October/November 2006
BY HAROLD EGELN
When the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce gave birth to Brooklyn Eats™ ten years ago it was an effort to market one of the borough’s best kept secrets – its restaurants. But, on Oct. 3, the annual tasting event at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge proved the secret is out. What was once a modest event is now the premier showcase of one of the hottest cuisine scenes in the city and a way to give back to the industry that’s giving so much to Brooklyn.
Nearly 60 Brooklyn food businesses – restaurants, caterers, gourmet grocers, along with wine, beer and specialty businesses – participated this year. And, the Brooklyn Chamber was proud to award the fifth annual Brooklyn Eats Scholarships to three hospitality management students studying at the New York City College of Technology, Downtown Brooklyn. Scholarship winners Veronica Maldonado, Jude Nwabuoku, and Rhonda Rondon unveiled their new recipe for, City Tech’s Wild Raspberry Cake (visit http://www.brooklyneats.com/), which they created just for the event.
Major funding for Brooklyn Eats was provided by New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and the Brooklyn delegation of the New York City Council. The event was sponsored by Commerce Bank with additional support from American Express, Pfizer, Inc., Sweet ‘N Low, TD Banknorth, N.A., Verizon Communications, and in collaboration with American Institute of Wine and Food-New York Chapter, New York City College of Technology, CUNY and Heart of Brooklyn.
