KeySpan Does Good Turn for Brooklyn's "Miracle Makers" back to Brooklyn's Progress Online

Brooklyn's Progress
November 2003

By KeySpan Corporation

It’s not quite a gift from heaven, but KeySpan Energy Delivery will help The Miracle Makers, Inc. save a bundle on energy bills and enhance the condition of buildings it owns -- while improving the quality of life in East New York, Brooklyn.

With support from KeySpan, The Miracle Makers, Inc. will be able to replace an ancient oil-burner in a venerable building at 2644 Atlantic Avenue with a new gas-heating unit.  The new gas-heater will be cleaner and more efficient than the old oil burner, and will provide significant cost savings to Miracle Makers.  Abilene Inc. will install the new gas-heating unit.

In addition, KeySpan has given Miracle Makers a Cinderella grant of $25,000 for the rehabilitation of 2644 Atlantic Avenue, and $25,000 for the rehabilitation of several adjoining buildings.

“KeySpan is pleased to help Miracle Makers enhance its facilities and fulfill its role in Brooklyn,” said Robert Moore, Vice President of Gas Sales and Marketing for KeySpan.  “Miracle Makers plays a vital role in the community, and KeySpan is pleased to help them save money they can use to help people in need.”

“KeySpan is known for its involvement in the communities it serves, and over the years it’s been a strong supporter of the work of Miracle Makers,” said Ann Vanterpool–Brown, Executive Director and CEO of The Miracle Makers Inc.  “The relationship between our organizations continues to strengthen and grow and demonstrate the value of private and philanthropic partnerships.”

The complex of buildings, at the corner of Atlantic and Pennsylvania Avenues, was once owned by the East New York Savings Bank.  One building served as a branch office, while the others housed bank employees.  A branch of M&T Savings Bank now operates in 2644 Atlantic Avenue, as does the East New York Development Corporation and the financial and Human Resources offices of The Miracle Makers, Inc.

Through its Cinderella program, KeySpan has supported the restoration of residential and commercial buildings and the development of affordable housing throughout Brooklyn.  The Cinderella program has recently been revamped to emphasize “green,” or environmentally sound, development.

The Miracle Makers, Inc. is a minority-run and women-operated agency in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.  Since 1972, Miracle Markers has served the community with a wide range of programs to meet the needs of families and children, including child care, child welfare and preventive services, assistance for disabled individuals, AIDS services, homeless assistance, and training for teenagers and young adults.
