Brooklyn's Progress December 2001
New York City Technical College (City Tech) in Downtown Brooklyn has received four gold and two bronze medals for excellence in graphic design and outstanding achievement in communications in the 2001 Medallion Awards regional competition sponsored by District 1 of the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR). City Tech competed against colleges and universities from 11 New England and Mid-Atlantic States, the District of Columbia and five Canadian provinces. The gold medals were for City Tech’s 2001 Viewbook, a poster series promoting an on-campus blood drive, a print ad that appeared in the Brooklyn Cyclones Yearbook, and a multi-faceted package of print materials and a colorful screen saver that were part of a marketing campaign used for student recruitment and other purposes citywide. Bronze medals were awarded to a series of six illustrated posters and for other design applications utilizing computer-generated photography. “The college community joins me in again commending our outstanding graphic design team for the considerable distinction its creative work continues to bring to City Tech,” said President Fred W. Beaufait, upon learning of the latest round of awards. “We applaud its work and the contribution that work is making to the image and reputation of the college.” The 2001 Medallion Awards follow five silver and bronze medals and certificates of merit for outstanding graphic design, creativity, message effectiveness and marketing execution received by the college earlier this year in a national competition sponsored by the prestigious Admissions Marketing Report. In that contest, City Tech was up against some of the best private and public colleges and universities in the country, many of which use world-class advertising agencies to design their ads, publications and marketing campaigns. The college was also recipient of eight gold, silver and bronze awards in last year’s NCMPR-sponsored Medallion Awards regional competition, and the work of its design team has also been officially commended by the New Jersey Art Directors Club. City Tech’s award-winning design team consists of Dominick Sarica, executive director of image and visual communication; Alberto Vargas, graphic designer; and Priska Diaz, an illustrator, graphic designer and graduate of the college’s unique and widely recognized baccalaureate program in communication design. Student interns from the college’s Advertising Design & Graphic Arts Department also make substantial creative contributions to City Tech’s highly successful image and marketing efforts. Sarica and Diaz represented the college at NCMPR’s 2001 District 1 Conference and Medallion Awards Ceremony held in early November at the Marriott Providence in Providence, RI.
