New Brooklyn Chinese Center of Lutheran Medical Center to Improve Healthcare to Chinese Population. back to Brooklyn's Progress Online

Brooklyn's Progress
February 2003

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined staff and patients of the Brooklyn Chinese Center, Lutheran Family Health Centers and the Primary Care Development Corporation (PCDC) for the grand opening of a state-of-the-art medical and dental practice located at 812 54th Street.

Over the past decade, the Chinese population of Sunset Park has doubled, creating a great need for linguistically and culturally appropriate health facilities.  In response to this need, Lutheran Family Health Centers created the Brooklyn Chinese Health Center; a 4,000-square foot center developed to meet the primary care needs of the Chinese population in Sunset Park and the surrounding areas.

The center provides family practice, pediatric, dental, obstetrics and gynecological services.  At full operation, the center expects to provide more than 20,000 visits annually.

“This center is a perfect example of a successful public/private partnership working together to meet the needs of New York City’s Asian community,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  “I applaud PCDC, Lutheran Medical Center and the Sunset Park Network for their commitment to building primary care capacity in underserved communities,” he added.

Lutheran Family Health Centers, sponsored by Lutheran Medical Center, is a federally qualified health center that operates seven full-time and 20 part-time primary care sites and 11 school health programs that generate more than 480,000 visits per year and several community programs including WIC, adult education and day care.

The Primary Care Development Corporation (PCDC) is a unique partnership of city, state, federal, philanthropic and private sector resources that work together to expand access to community based primary care services to the city’s medically underserved communities.

The Brooklyn Chinese Family Health Center is open five days a week.  Call (718) 686-2680 for more information.
