Brooklyn's Progress April 2001 Brooklyn’s Kitchen, the food sales and marketing program of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, exhibited at the SIAL tradeshow held, for the first time, in Montreal, Canada. Brooklyn’s Kitchen seized this opportunity to introduce five successful Brooklyn-based food manufacturers to the Canadian market: Amnon’s Pizza, Brooklyn Bottling, Dynamic Health, Joyva and Steve’s Mom. SIAL is a name in agri-business that catches attention wherever the tradeshow is held. Brooklyn’s international reputation for quality kosher products was much appreciated by Montreal’s growing kosher market as well as Quebecois’ demand for all-natural preservative-free food. Other buyers came from Asia, the Caribbean, Israel, Philippines and states even closer to home: Connecticut, Georgia and Massachusetts. Lisa Kralovic and Valérie Larson garnered 120 sales leads for Brooklyn’s Kitchen clients. Brooklyn’s Kitchen’s booth featured kosher and all-natural products: Amnon’s kosher pizzas and deep dish; Brooklyn Bottling’s Squeez’r juices, Tropical Fantasy and Best Health sodas; Dynamic Health’s fruit extracts, purees and noni juice; Joyva’s Halvah, sesame crunch bars, Jell Rings and Marshmallow Twists; Steve’s Mom’s authentic rugelach. With the Brooklyn companies’ cooperation, buyers and distributors tasted numerous samples and gave positive feed-back on the quality and taste. One Canadian retailer was so interested in Amnon’s pizza that he plans to meet with Sol Levy next week while on a New York business trip. Buyers and distributors showed a great interest in Brooklyn Bottling’s Squeez’r juices and also in their Tropical Fantasy sodas. Canadian specialty shops and health food stores were fascinated by the 100% all-natural fruit concentrates and the flavorful taste of Dynamic Health’s unique Noni juice. Many Canadians familiar with original halvah or halvah with pistachios discovered new flavors thanks to Joyva’s halvah. Former New Yorkers were pleased to see Joyva’s signature Jell Rings and Marshmallow Twists. Last but not least, previously unfamiliar with rugelach, the Quebecois were thrilled by Steve’s Mom’s traditional rugelach pastries. Most Canadians had never before seen the gourmet treat. As expected, the SIAL Montreal was a huge success with more than 400 exhibitors and over 12,000 visitors for its premiere. The SIAL series started 35 years ago with a tradeshow held every two years in the capital city of a country famous for its gastronomy focus: Paris, France. Due to SIAL’s reputation, the show now exports itself to key markets in Latin America (SIAL Mercosur in Buenos Aires), Asia (SIAL China in Shanghai and SIAL Asia in Singapore) and now the North American market with SIAL Montreal. SIAL Montreal aims to increase North American trade between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, and organizers hope SIAL Montreal will become the leading food show in North America. Brooklyn’s Kitchen’s next tradeshow is FMI in Chicago May 6-8, 2001. A complete tradeshow schedule can be found on our website: www.ibrooklyn.com.
