 | | P.S. 196, Ten Eyck School, in Bushwick, received a 2003 Pathfinder Award on March 27. School principal, Marie Buono, receives a trophy, a $1,000 check and an Apple Computer laptop from David Schaffer, Corporate Secretary and President of the Public Policy Institute for the Business Council. Patricia Synan, Superintendent, Community School District 14, looks on. The Pathfinder Award is presented for Outstanding Educational Improvement. The award is sponsored by member companies of The Business Council. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is a member of the organization. Bob Catell, KeySpan Corporation, is chair of The Business Council, representing the first time that a Brooklyn business has served at the helm of the organization. Each year, the Business Council makes the award to only 24 of the more than 2,900 elementary schools in New York State. P.S. 196 was one of two schools in the region to have made the greatest combined percent improvement on the state’s 4th grade Math and English Lanugage Arts test from 2001 to 2002. P.S. 26, Jesse Owens School, also in the Bushwick area received an award. |

 | | P.S. 196 school chorus sings a medley of patriotic songs during the Pathfinder Awards ceremony. The school has about 600 students in grades pre-K through 6. A representative from U.S. Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez’s office presented the school with a certificate for Excellence in Education which has been submitted to the Library of Congress. A representative from New York State Assemblyman Vito Lopez’s office presented the school with a certificate of merit. Ms. Synan, Community School District 14 Superintendent presented the school with a plaque. |
