Brooklyn's Progress April/May 2006

The Downtown Brooklyn Council is pleased to announce that Doug Giuliano joined the organization as Project Coordinator on Feb. 21.
The Downtown Brooklyn Council, an independent affiliate of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, is an economic development advocacy organization devoted to promoting the growth of the greater Downtown Brooklyn area. The Council, in partnership with the New York City Department of City Planning and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, created the Downtown Brooklyn Development Plan, a comprehensive zoning plan that seeks to expand the commercial, residential, retail, cultural and academic space in Downtown Brooklyn.
As Project Coordinator, Mr. Giuliano will assist Director Michael Burke in fulfilling the Downtown Redevelopment Plan specifically with respect to the Business Improvement District (BID) expansion effort, analyses of traffic and transportation management issues and the production of various Downtown-focused reports.
“Doug's a great addition to our team, particularly with his project management experience and focus on transportation issues,” says Mr. Burke.
“I’m always interested in Transit Oriented Development and any other tools to create quality urban places,” says Mr. Giuliano. “I was attracted to the Council because they have been so effective at transforming a previously underused area into a higher and better use, helping Downtown Brooklyn achieve its potential.”
Prior to joining the Council, Mr. Giuliano worked at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with their Long Term Community Recovery team in Mississippi where he assisted localities after Hurricane Katrina. He compiled sports statistics for the sports section of the Austin American-Statesman in Austin, Texas, and also worked on Transit Oriented Development issues for the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. Mr. Giuliano received his Bachelors degree in English from LaSalle University and his Masters of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently he resides in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn.
