Cablevision's Power to Learn 2001 Scholarship Program back to Brooklyn's Progress Online

Brooklyn's Progress
July 2001

Cablevision Systems Corporation awarded ten $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Brooklyn, as part of the company's "Power To Learn" education initiative. Power to Learn provides scholarships to 100 students in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut who live in or attend school in Cablevision service areas. Awards were based on scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, community involvement, teacher recommendations and student essays. A panel of community leaders reviewed the students’ applications. Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce president Kenneth Adams was one of the judges. "As the cost of higher education rises, many families find it challenging to provide their children with a college education," said Lee Whitmore, vice president of Education, Cablevision. "Cablevision is honored to play a role in helping talented young students fulfill their dreams," Whitmore said. According to statistics from the College Board, the cost to attend a four-year public college has increased by nearly eight percent in the last two years. Power To Learn is a non-commercial education initiative designed to give students in Cablevision's tri-state service areas the best possible chance to succeed in a new digital century. The initiative enables students, teachers and parents in more than 800 schools and libraries to leverage the power of broadband in the classroom by offering high-speed Internet access connections, an award-winning online learning community at www.powertolearn.com, and a training program for educators on the effective application of technology in today's classrooms. Cablevision Systems Corporation is one of the nation's leading entertainment and telecommunications companies. Its cable television operations serve more than 3 million households located primarily in the New York metropolitan area. The company's advanced telecommunications offerings include its Lightpath integrated business communications services and its Optimum-branded high-speed Internet service. Cablevision's Rainbow Media Holdings, Inc. subsidiary operates programming businesses including American Movie Classics, Bravo, FOX Sports Net and other national and regional services. Cablevision also owns a controlling interest and operates Madison Square Garden and its sports teams including the Knicks and Rangers. The company operates New York's famed Radio City Music Hall and owns and operates THE WIZ consumer electronics stores and Clearview Cinemas in the New York metropolitan area.
