Brooklyn's Progress July 2002
Community Capital Bank celebrated the first anniversary of its Sunset Park Branch on April 25 by thanking its branch customers and the Sunset Park community for welcoming the bank to the area. Dozens of customers and community leaders attended the event, which was held at the branch located at 140 58th Street, at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. “Thanks to you the Sunset Park branch surpassed our original projections by 30 percent during the first full year of operation,” Charles F. Koehler, president and CEO of Community Capital Bank told the group. “Since we opened the branch, we have been able to attract a significant number of established middle market companies and tap into a new source of deposits.” Community Capital Bank also has become involved in many local activities in Sunset Park, including serving Thanksgiving Dinner to the needy at the Salvation Army Sunset Park Corps every year and collaborating with the Sunset Park Lions Club on a recent toy drive and health fair. In recognition of its civic contributions, the Sunset Park Lions Club recognized Community Capital Bank as Bank of the Year in 2001. Community Capital Bank’s Sunset Park Branch officially opened on December 15, 2000, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by New York State Comptroller H. Carl McCall, former Borough President Howard Golden, and other dignitaries and customers. At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, McCall presented Community Capital Bank with a check for $10 million in State funds as part of a statewide initiative designed to promote economic development in communities in need of greater banking services. Community Capital Bank was eligible for the deposit because the State had declared Sunset Park a Banking Development District under the program. Since it opened more than ten years ago, Community Capital Bank has specialized in providing banking services to individuals, nonprofit organizations, small businesses, developers of affordable housing, real estate entrepreneurs, and construction firms in all five boroughs of New York City. It is New York’s first community development bank, a Treasury-designated Community Development Financial Institution, and the only Brooklyn-based SBA preferred lender. Last year, the bank received the SBA’s Bronze Award in recognition of its success. In addition to the Sunset Park branch, Community Capital Bank operates a full-service branch at 111 Livingston Street, in downtown Brooklyn.
