August 2003

Carl S. Young, President of the New York Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (NYAHSA) presented New York Congregational Nursing Center with the prestigious 2003 Innovation of the Year Award for the Sow and Grow Plant Care Horticulture Program. The ceremony took place at New York Congregational Nursing Center on June 20, 2003.

The NYAHSA Innovation of the Year Award recognizes a facility and its employees whose vision and creativity make them leaders in care and services to the elderly.

"Whether you are from Trinidad or Poland, horticulture is universal. It bonds people together with the common goal of caring for living things - plants," said Celia Zuckerman, Executive Vice President. "New York Congregational Nursing Center's Sow and Grow Horticulture Therapy Program has flourished with the support of our many outstanding partners, including the Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment, PS 235, New York City Parks Department, Consolidated Edison and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden," she added.

NYCNC is a 200-bed, skilled nursing facility located in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. The Center provides short-term care for patients with complex medical needs who require rehabilitation therapy before returning home, and long-term care for residents requiring skilled services while living in a stimulating and caring environment.

NYAHSA is a statewide organization of socially responsible, community-benefit organizations dedicated to providing high quality health care, housing, and community services to the elderly and people with special needs. NYAHSA's more than 500 members serve an estimated 500,000 New Yorkers annually.
