Brooklyn's Progress September 2002
Almost 500 people attended the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Corporate breakfast, hosted at the New York Marriott Brooklyn. The breakfast, a kick-off to Brooklyn's first annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-k walk, was held to educate and recruit people for the walk. Attendees learned how as individuals and as companies they can make a difference in their lives and the lives of others, bringing us one step closer to finding a cure. The First Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Brooklyn will be held on October 20th in Prospect Park. Proceeds from this 5-kilometer event will support the American Cancer Society's life-saving research program, patient and family support services, and advocacy to improve access to care, screening and mammograms for women. "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is not only about breast cancer awareness, it’s about bringing people together - a sense of community - and we need that now more than ever," said Joy Stephan, the event manager. "You'll see mothers, husbands, children - thousands of people walking together and having fun. And it makes you feel great to know that every step they take helps bring us one step closer to a cure." "By supporting our programs you will take the power to make early detection a reality," concluded Ms. Stephan. "So let your feet make all the difference in the world in the fight against breast cancer, join Making Strides Against Breast Cancer!" The American Cancer Society's walk will begin with a survivor tribute to honor all those who have battled cancer and a moment of silence will be observed in memory of all those who have lost the fight. Sandra Bookman from WABC and Steve Roy from Lite-FM were the morning's emcees. Speakers included: Hector Batista, the Executive Vice President for the American Cancer Society Metro Region; Don Distasio, the American Cancer Society CEO; Bill Thompson, Comptroller for NYC; Jean Ward, 8-year breast cancer survivor and American Cancer Society volunteer. Some of the sponsors included Pamela Adamo - Keyspan Corporation, Gilbert Rivera - Park Avenue Building and Roofing Suppliers, Bob Astrowsky - United Federation of Teachers and Barbara Boscarino - Pathmark (also a breast cancer survivor). |
