| March 17, 2010 to May 02, 2010 Visit Brooklyn Historical Society to explore “Pages of the Past,” an exhibit featuring the beautiful diaries and drawings of Dutch explorer Jasper Danckaerts. In 1679, Jasper Danckaerts and his colleague Peter Sluyter came to New York in search of land for a religious colony. Danckaerts’ meticulously written and illustrated diaries lay undiscovered until Henry C. Murphy, a founder of the Long Island Historical Society (later renamed the Brooklyn Historical Society), came upon the diaries in 1864, in an Amsterdam book store. Now an important part of the BHS collection, the diaries will be featured in this exhibit in celebration of the 400 Years of the Dutch in New York. The exhibit is curated by students participating in BHS’ educational program Exhibition Laboratory (Ex Lab), where local high school students are introduced to the art of exhibition preparation.
The exhibit opens June 5, 2009 and is on view through May 2, 2010. Exhibit hours are Wednesday through Friday, 12 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
