Chamber Prepares for Building Brooklyn Awards 2006 back to Recent News home
January 11, 2006

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has announced it is accepting nominations for the 2006 Building Brooklyn Awards. This annual event recognizes recently completed construction projects that have had a positive impact on the borough’s economy and quality of life.

“The Building Brooklyn Awards enable the Brooklyn Chamber to shine a spotlight on a diverse selection of exciting projects that represent major new investment in our borough,” said Kenneth Adams, President of the Brooklyn Chamber.

This year the Brooklyn Chamber is accepting nominations in 15 categories: education, public works, community facility, arts and culture, religious facility, industrial, office building, office interior, retail building, retail storefront, residential-single family, residential-medium density, residential-multi-family, residential-affordable housing, and green building.

The new “green” building category was created this year to recognize buildings that are environmentally responsible in their use of recycled and environmentally-friendly materials, energy and resource conservation, “green” design and land reclamation.

Eligible projects should have received a Certificate of Occupancy prior to December 31, 2005.  Projects that were nominated for Building Brooklyn Awards last year but did not win may be re-submitted for consideration.

In 2005, fourteen construction projects from around the borough were recognized during a ceremony held at the Brooklyn Museum that attracted more than 300 attendees including real estate, design and construction professionals and government officials.  The Building Brooklyn Awards also honors individuals who have made significant contributions toward enhancing the business conditions and economic climate of Brooklyn.  Last year’s honorees were Shaun Donovan, Commissioner, NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development and John Griffith, Executive Vice President of Property Development, Target Corporation.

A panel of architects, planners, government officials, economic development experts and business leaders will select the award recipients.  The Building Brooklyn Awards ceremony and cocktail reception will be held in July 2006 at the Brooklyn Museum.
