From rugelach like your bubbie used to make back in Brooklyn Heights to sophisticated sorbets fit for the menu of a Park Slope bistro, today’s Brooklyn-based food manufacturers are serving up products that invoke memories of Brooklyn’s historic past and offer a glimpse into its cutting-edge culinary future.
Five companies – Hena, Inc., Erica’s Rugelach & Baking Co., Great King/King of the Sea, Wine Cellar Sorbet, and Tower Isles Frozen Foods, Ltd. – will be exhibiting at the 53rd Summer Fancy Food Show at the REAL BROOKLYN booths (booths 5414 and 5416). REAL BROOKLYN™, an initiative dedicated to celebrating and promoting Brooklyn-made food products, is part of Brooklyn Goes Global (BGG), a marketing initiative created by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to help small Brooklyn-based manufacturers sell their products nationally and internationally by providing sales and marketing support.
“From Nathan’s Hot Dogs to Junior’s Cheesecake, Brooklyn is home to many famous food brands. Today Brooklyn is home to hundreds of food manufacturers, whose products are inspired by the unique history and culture of Brooklyn. The REAL BROOKLYN marketing program is helping to make these the iconic Brooklyn foods of tomorrow,” states Steve Kaplansky, director, Brooklyn Goes Global.
Exhibitors at this year’s show are:
Hena, Inc. (561-703-3841): Brooklynites have always shared a passion for a cup of coffee as bold and compelling as its history. Hena, Inc., a third-generation coffee roaster specializing in high-quality gourmet and food service coffees has taken that passion and love, to develop a coffee that is the benchmark for “REAL BROOKLYN” titled Brooklyn Coffeehouse Blend.
Erica’s Rugelach & Baking Co. (http://www.ericasrugelach.com/): Praised by top publications ranging from Food + Wine magazine to USA Today, Erica’s Rugelach & Baking Co. features a distinctive line of premium quality, freshly prepared bakery treats. Inspired by her great aunt’s secrets, Erica Lynn Kalick’s all-butter recipes include melt-in-your-mouth hamantashen, linzer hearts, Belgian chocolate brownies and specialty cookies including vegan varieties.
Great King/King of the Sea Tuna (http://www.kingoftheseatuna.com/): Since 1986, Great King/King of the Sea Tuna has been setting the standard in tuna taste and tradition. Founder Moses Freund, who grew up working in his father’s Brooklyn fish market, began selling primarily to Orthodox Jewish grocery stores in the New York area. Perceiving the need for a tuna fine-tuned for great taste as well as mercury safety, Mr. Freund searched the world over for the best suppliers and created a canned kosher tuna using the finest yellowfin tuna available. With today’s heightened interest in mercury safety, King of the Sea has received coverage in The New York Times and Time magazine and demand has grown sufficiently to permit national availability.
Wine Cellar Sorbet (http://www.winecellarsorbet.com/): Wine Cellar Sorbets’ mission is to produce the finest quality sorbets made from finished wines from around the world. The first and only producer of true varietal wine sorbet, the factory is located in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn and services a growing list of the finest gourmet retail markets, restaurants and catering halls since January of 2006. Wine Cellar Sorbets are premium, all natural sorbets made from finished wine. The flavors are based on the vintages, varietals and viticulture regions where the wines were produced – each flavor is unique, hand crafted and limited in availability. Wine Sorbet's goal is to preserve as much flavor of the wine as possible by adding minimal amounts of non-wine ingredients. They are available in beautifully designed pint containers for the retail markets and in 5-quart containers for food service.
Tower Isles Frozen Foods, Ltd. (towerislespatties.com): Snacks in a pocket of warm, crusty dough are a favorite of Brooklynites. Representing the borough’s Caribbean population, Tower Isles Frozen Foods is a purveyor of original Jamaican-style beef and chicken patties and specialty foods made from wholesome ingredients.
Guests to the REAL BROOKLYN booths can enter to win Brooklyn Cyclones tickets, Brooklyn wine, Brooklyn Coffeehouse Blend T-shirts, REAL BROOKLYN hats, and more. For more information about the REAL BROOKLYN™ program and participants, visit http://www.buyrealbrooklyn.com/. |
