More than 300 people crowded two Brooklyn venues to handle Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce business and celebrate 90 years of the organization’s work. The evening began at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights. The night heralded a new era for the Chamber with the election of Peter Meyer, Commerce Bank, NYC market president, as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
“It is truly exciting to be elected Chairman by fellow Chamber Members and to be given the opportunity to lead an organization with such a rich history. Dan did an amazing job during his tenure and I look forward to leading this new era.” said Mr. Meyer. “With such an incredible board and staff the Brooklyn business community can be confident this organization is poised for the future.”
“In the first year of my presidency Dan Holt was overwhelmingly helpful and accessible. His sound advice and guidance will be missed but we look forward to Dan’s continued involvement as a valued Chamber Member,” said Mr. Hum. “Peter Meyer is a great business and community leader and we are honored to have him as Chair of the Chamber. I am looking forward to working with him to make sure the Chamber advocates on behalf of its Members to support and promote a healthy business environment in Brooklyn.” Outgoing Chairman Daniel Holt, who served two terms, received a resounding welcome from the crowd when he was introduced by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. During Mr. Holt’s chairmanship, the organization saw an increase in membership; program participation grew; and, he saw the organization through a change of leadership in day to day operations when current President Carl Hum assumed his position after Kenneth Adams left after 12 years at the organization.
“I believe Carl has helped bring some deep experiences and a new direction to the Chamber and under his, and Peter’s leadership, and that of the entire executive committee I believe the best days of the Chamber are not just to come, but are going to come quickly,” said Mr. Holt.
Mr. Hum unveiled the Chamber’s exciting, new strategic plan. In his remarks, Mr. Meyer stressed the importance of the organizational mission and vision. With new leadership at the upper most level of the Chamber and the addition of new officers and directors, the Chamber’s goals are paramount.
“When my career began, organizations like the Chamber were key to my success,” said Mr. Meyer. “This strategic plan is a great way to move our organization forward and to effectively serve our membership.”
“Our strategic framework will help guide the organization to make the right decisions and allocate the proper resources to ensure our membership is served. It will also ensure the Chamber remains at the forefront of innovation and is a thought leader.”
Chamber Members and guests were ushered to a second location, the Brooklyn Historical Society, to commemorate the Chamber’s 90th Anniversary. There in the midst of a Chamber exhibit, The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the Business Evolution of a Borough, which included photos and other memorabilia from as far back as the 1920’s the newest board members conversed with local elected officials and past Chamber Chairmen.
