Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Carl Hum's Statement on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Proposed FY 2010 Executive Budget
“The executive budget issued last Friday represents the tough choices our municipal leaders must face. The Chamber appreciates the hard work and thought that went into creating this balanced budget. As the city moves to negotiate this $59.4 billion budget we urge a reexamination of the proposed sales tax increase and the elimination of the tax exemption on clothing and shoes. At times such as these, we have to give consumers the spending power they need to reinvigorate our local economy and support our businesses. We cannot afford to push consumers to the suburbs or other states to do their shopping. For Brooklyn these regressive taxes will affect our retail community which has already taken a hit during this recession and our middle class families which have already seen their purchasing power decline.” |
